THE LOCATION

In the heart of ‘France Profonde’, above the Dordogne and to the south of the Loire Valley, with it’s famous chateaux and vineyards, LA FAYE lies two miles outside the village of Antigny, five minutes from the famous town of Saint Savin, and fifteen minutes from the beautiful medieval market town of Chauvigny.

This is a wonderfully unspoilt landscape of farmland, forests, rivers and lakes. Within easy striking distance are excellent facilities for windsurfing, cycling, canoeing , golfing, riding, climbing, gliding and fishing. The Blue Guide to France, or the Michelin Green Guide tell you everything that you may want to know about the famous chateaux of the Loire region to the North.

There  are plenty of vineyards to visit, if you are prepared to drive for one to one and a half hours. Probably two of the best known are Vouvray and Montlouis which are just east of Tours. There is Muscadet from Sevre et Maine, and fruity dry wines from Sancerre and Pouilly. For red wine drinkers there are Saumur Champigny, Gamay de Touraine, Chinon, Bourgeuil. There are plenty of inexpensive bars and restaurants in the surrounding villages, usually having excellent fixed priced menus. Particularly good value are the places where the workmen eat, where a large lunch costs about 55 to 60F. Children can usually eat for half price if you remember to ask at the outset.

Access is good. The Paris / Bordeaux autoroute is only 45 minutes away, and the TGV (High Speed Train) stops at Poitiers and Chatellerault. FUTUROSCOPE, one of the biggest attractions in France is also in Poitiers. We would point out however that you really do need a car to stay at La Faye.

THE SETTING

LA FAYE is a lovely, heavily beamed old stone farmhouse. Inside we have retained , restored and exposed ,where necessary , the beautiful original features, such as mellow flagstone floors, stone quoins round most of the doors and windows , and  oak beams throughout. Having stripped the house back to its original state, we then added 20th  century essentials, as discreetly as possible! These include totally new wiring, and plumbing  (which actually, touch wood, works !) with three new bathrooms, one of which has been built to accommodate wheelchair users. We have tried to make the house as comfortable and user friendly as possible, whilst safeguarding its original feel and character.

The house lies at the end of a private lane, well away from the public road. It is surrounded by fields, and is, therefore, a particularly safe setting for children . La Faye and its beautiful old stone barns and outbuildings, form a rectangle, surrounding a large grass courtyard.. The house faces south and so the courtyard is a perfect place for barbecues, games and sunbathing . Gates close the courtyard off from the pool.

Leaving the courtyard, a small path takes you round the corner to the magnificent 40 ft pool, which has an attractive terrace with sunloungers, underwater floodlighting at night, and heating if required. There is a 'Roman End' with shallow steps, which makes access very easy for young and old.
